Chandrapur is also called Chanda (was the official name till the year 1964) and is a leading city cum municipal corporation in the district of Chandrapur. It is a part of the State of Maharashtra and the headquarters of the whole district. It is a fort city that was established by a King from the Gond dynasty in the 13th century. The Chandrapur Municipal Corporation governs the city which has a total area of 76 square kilometers and a population of 355,739 people as of 2011.
