Leh is the joint capital of the Indian administered Union Territory of Ladakh and the biggest city within the region as well. Leh lies in the District of Leh and was once the capital to the Kingdom of Ladakh, with its administrative seat at the famous Leh Palace, the previous home to the ruling family of Ladakh. It mirrors the Potala Palace at Tibet. Leh lies at 3,524 meters while being connected to the National Highways 1 and 3. Leh was once a crucial stop for trading routes going along the Indus Valley. The main goods included Banaras brocade, silk yarn, indigo, cannabis resin, cashmere wool, grains, and more. The area is governed by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and covers 9.15 square kilometers in total. The population stood at 30,870 people as of the year 2011. The coordinates of Leh are 34°09′51″N 77°35′05″E.
