Karauli is a leading city in Rajasthan and is also the administrative hub of the District of Karauli. It was once the capital to the princely State of Karauli. The district falls under the Bharatpur Divisional Commissionerate. Karauli was earlier within the Matsya Kingdom with Alwar as per the Mahabharata legends. The contemporary princely State was established in approximately 995 by the Raja Bijai Pal. The city is governed by the Nagar Parishad. The total area covered is 32 square kilometers while it lies at an elevation of 275 meters. The population of the city stood at 82,960 people as of the year 2011. The coordinates of Karauli are 26.5°N 77.02°E.
