Wayanad is among the 12 districts in Kerala with Mananthavady. It came into being on 1st November 1980, and the name of the state has been derived from Vayal Nadu, which indicates land of paddy fields. The picturesque plateau is 700 metres and 2100 metres, and it is located on the mountains of western ghats. It is also considered towards the eastern part of Northern Kerala and on the sides of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is known that the district has been carved from Kannur and Kozhikode Districts.
The district is spread over 885.92 square kilometres. The culture is tribal-related, but the district is one of the biggest foreign exchange earners and produces cash crops such as cardamom, coffee, team pepper and other spices.
Wayanad has an 846 637 population, giving it 482nd in India. There are 1035 females for every 1000 males in the district. Its literacy rate is 89.32%.
