Birbhum is a leading district lying within the State of West Bengal. It is also the northernmost such district in the entire division of Burdwan. It has its district headquarters at Suri while other cities include Rampurhat, Bolpur, Sainthia and others. Birbhum is also known as the land of red soil and is home to the globally-acclaimed Visva Bharati University established by Poet Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan. Birbhum is also famous for its Pous Mela and several other festivals. Agriculture is the primary means of income generation for the local population along with cotton and silk harvesting, oilseed and rice milling, lac harvesting, metalware and pottery production, stone mining, and more.
