Gwalior is a leading city in the State of Madhya Pradesh. It lies in the northern half of the State and is 343 km away southwards from New Delhi. It is also 120 km away from Agra and 414 km away from the Capital of the State, that is Bhopal. Gwalior is located prominently in the Gird zone. The city has a rich history of its own and was reported as the city with the best AQI (air quality index) of 152 amongst Madhya Pradesh’s top four cities in 2021. Gwalior was once ruled by the Kachchhapaghatas back in the 10th century before passing to the Tomar dynasty in the 13th century and then the Mughals. It came to the Maratha rulers in 1754 before the Scindia dynasty in the 18th century. The total area covered by Gwalior is 289 square kilometres while its population stood at 1,054,420 people as of 2011. Gwalior was established in 8 AD as per legends and was named after Suraj Sen, a local chieftain who was cured of his leprosy after consuming a beverage given by Gwalipa, a holy man.
