Anji Khad Bridge: Fact guide

The Anji Khad Bridge spans the Anji Khad River, connecting the Katra and Reasi sections of the Jammu-Baramulla Railway Line in the Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir.  It is the country’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. The bridge enables the transportation of goods and services across the river, facilitating business activities and boosting economic growth in the region.

Anji Khad Bridge: Construction features

Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), constructed this structure.The Anji Khad bridge links Tunnel T2 on the Katra side and Tunnel T3 on the Reasi side. An arch-bridge design was initially proposed, but it was later deemed unsuitable due to concerns over geological stability. Instead, a cable-stayed bridge design was accepted, involving 96 cables to support the bridge’s 290-m span at 196 m. The project is 1,300 m long  and has a 120-m viaduct.  The estimated cost of the project is Rs 458 crore.

Maintenance and upkeep

Due to the bridge’s location in hilly terrain, extreme weather conditions and heavy traffic, it requires regular maintenance to ensure longevity.

Safety concerns and mitigation measures

The structure, design and load-bearing capacity of the bridge need regular assessment to prevent accidents. 

Future developments and upgrades

There are plans to expand the bridge to accommodate more traffic, including heavy commercial vehicles. The authorities also plan to install the sensors and cameras to monitor the bridge’s structural integrity and enhance its safety features.
