Land acquisition for Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro project is officially completed. According to CMRL, over 82% of the required land has already been purchased for the 118.9 km metro corridor with 128 stations.
The system comprises three metro corridors, which include the 45.8-km Corridor 3 from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, 26.1-km Corridor 4 from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass and 47-km Corridor 5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur.
According to the CMRL officials, 93 hectare of the required 112.72 hectare for the project have already been purchased. Steps have been taken to ensure faster and easier land acquisition for the phase 2 project. The size of the Metro stations in Phase 2 has been reduced to 150 metres as compared to 220 metres in the Phase 1 project.
Phase 2 project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 63,246 crore. Construction is likely to be completed by the end of 2026.
Phase 1 of the Chennai metro that is fully operational comprises a 54.1-km network with two metro corridors. There are 41 metro stations, which include 21 underground stations and 20 elevated stations.
