August 12, 2024: In a move that will enhance the commuting experience for Delhi Metro passengers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to introduce a new virtual card system. The new feature, which will be available on the Momentum 2.0 mobile application, will replace the physical smart card. With this, commuters will be able to recharge their smart wallet on the phone application ahead of their journeys, without the need to carry cash or physical smart cards.
Currently, QR-code-based tickets are generated on the application, but they are valid only for a single journey. However, with the virtual smart card, commuters can book multiple journeys through the same QR code generated on the app, according to officials as cited in media reports.
How will the DMRC’s virtual card benefit commuters?
- It will ensure convenience for metro passengers as metro fare can be paid through one’s phone. They will no longer need to carry cash or physical smart cards.
- The card eliminates the need to buy new tickets or physical passes for every journey.
- It will be integrated with existing features, including the Delhi Metro QR ticket option available through Amazon Pay.
- Virtual cards are eco-friendly as they will replace paper tickets and physical smart cards.
- It is a secure method of managing metro fare. The balance is stored securely on the mobile application. So, even if the phone is misplaced or damaged, the balance will be protected.
- The mobile app will support different payment methods for recharging the wallet.
“We are working on the implementation of a ‘store value QR code’ system to provide a seamless ticketing experience to passengers. Through this feature, a passenger only needs to top up the QR wallet on the mobile app as required, without having to purchase new physical or virtual QR on each travel journey. It will also remove any need to carry a physical entity such as a pass or ticket for travel,” the DMRC said, as cited in media reports.
