February 19, 2024: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on February 15, 2024, launched the ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative, inviting Expressions of Interest (EoI) from various sectors and industries. This initiative aims to revolutionise infrastructure planning and design by incorporating 5G, IoT, AI, ‘Digital Twin’ and advanced computational technologies. Digital Twin technology creates virtual replicas of physical assets, enabling real-time monitoring, simulation and analysis for iterative experimentation and feedback loops to achieve optimal outcomes.
The ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative consists of a Proof of Concept (PoC) conducted in two stages within a major Indian city. The first stage focuses on exploratory activities to define the project’s scope and encourage creative exploration of its potential. The second stage involves practical demonstrations of specific use cases to develop a future blueprint, potentially serving as a roadmap for scaling successful strategies in future infrastructure projects.
In a world grappling with rapid urbanisation, climate change and resource management challenges, digital twins offer a promising solution. They empower city planners and policymakers to simulate and analyse scenarios, facilitating data-driven decisions to create more sustainable, efficient and liveable urban environments.
While the exact timeline of the project remains undisclosed, in November 2023, the Survey of India (SOI) entered into an agreement with Indian private mapping companies, including Gainers International, to replicate urban landscapes and physical assets with precise details and develop 3D maps in accordance with national geospatial policies. The objective is to create digital replicas of major cities and towns across the country by 2035, aligning with national objectives.
The deadline for submitting expressions of interest (EoI) responses is March 15, 2024. Interested parties can pre-register by visiting the Sangam website at https://sangam.sancharsaathi.gov.in. The platform also hosts a blog for pre-registered participants to connect, share insights and engage in discussions.
