June 12, 2023: Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on June 11 inaugurated the Shelad to Nandura stretch of the Amravati-Chikhali National Highway-53 (NH53) at Khamgaon, Buldhana, Maharashtra. It cost Rs 816 crore to build the stretch, the ministry said in a statement.

The total length of the quadrangle project of the Sadar Shelad-Nandura division is 45 km, and includes 14-km of new bypass, four major bridges, 16 minor bridges, 63 culverts, one railway overbridge, eight vehicle underpasses, two pedestrian underpasses and 12 bus shelters.
“The National Highway-53 is important as an important trade link among Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The highway connects Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, (Khamgaon) Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Nagpur and Bhandara districts of Maharashtra. This highway is also important as it has good connectivity for the Raipur-Nagpur-Surat or the East-West corridor,” it said, adding that this project will be useful for the famous silver market of Silver City Khamgaon.

“With this project the problem of traffic congestion in the Khamgaon city has been solved, and it will also help in reducing the number of accidents…The project will facilitate reaching Shegaon, Lonar or religiously and geographically important places. The project will lead to development of tourism, health, education and employment generation,” the ministry said.
