History
Kangra or Gaggal Airport was inaugurated in 1986 by Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh. Initially, the airport was a small facility that served a limited amount of air traffic, primarily connecting the region to major Indian cities. After four years, in 1990, the airport saw its first scheduled flight, a Vayudoot. In 1999, during India and Pakistan’s Kargil War, Gaggal Airport was critical in facilitating the movement of troops and supplies to the northern front.
The Gaggal Airport was renamed Kangra Airport in 2001 to better reflect its role as the Kangra Valley’s gateway. Gaggal Airport has undergone several phases of development to improve its infrastructure. Upgrades included improvements to the runway, terminal facilities, and navigation systems, allowing for more efficient and safe operations. In 2007, the airport underwent significant expansion. The runway was extended to 1,370 metres, allowing ATR-42 aircraft to fly, creating new opportunities for connectivity.
Moving forward to October 2013, new decisions were made, a new survey was conducted, and the expansion of additional land began. After all of this, in August 2014, the District Administration received an official order to conduct an expansion survey and contact the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Team AAI began to work to ensure the success of this project or initiative. Gaggal Airport continues to play an important role in connecting the scenic Dhauladhar region with major cities across India, thereby promoting tourism and local economic development. There have also been controversies about its name among Gaggal villagers.
Location and connectivity
The airport, also known as Kangra Airport, is located in the town of Gaggal, about 12 kilometres from the district headquarters in Dharamshala, 8 kilometres from Kangra, and 20 kilometres from McLeod Ganj (the residence of the Tibetan government-in-exile and Dharamshala, known for its spiritual aura and vibrant atmosphere). To be more precise, the airport is located on National Highway 154, which connects Pathankot and Mandi. While the airport is relatively small, it is a key entrance to the Kangra Valley and the surrounding area. It is well-connected to major Indian cities, with regular flights to Delhi, Kullu, Chandigarh, and Dharamsala.
It is located in a scenic area, and passengers can enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayas from the airport. The airport is only a short drive from the Kangra Valley, making it an ideal choice for tourists. Its connectivity has improved over time, making access to major cities easier. The airport’s runway is relatively short, limiting the types of planes that can land there. Because of the runway length, there are fewer flight options than at larger airports. Also, because of its remote location, some travellers may find it difficult to reach.
Infrastructure
Gaggal Airport, located in the breathtaking Dhauladhar ranges, has a one-of-a-kind infrastructure designed specifically for its mountainous environment. The airport has a single runway for takeoffs and landings. The single-terminal building has a compact design with check-in counters, security screening, and arrival/departure lounges. The runway is well-maintained, ensuring safe operations for a wide range of aircraft. During peak hours, its terminal can accommodate 300 passengers. The interiors feature Himachali architecture, which adds a touch of regional charm. The runway extends to 1,370 metres (4,528 feet), allowing ATR-42 and similar-sized aircraft to operate. The surrounding area is mountainous, which limits the airport’s ability to expand. The airport offers essential services such as baggage handling, restrooms, and a small food court. On-site parking is limited, but there are additional options nearby.

Challenges
Limited runway length
At 1,370 metres, the runway limits the types of aircraft that can land at the airport. Larger planes, which may bring in additional visitors and improve connectivity, cannot fly here.
Expansion challenges
Plans to extend the runway have been stalled for years due to purchasing land and environmental concerns. Finding sustainable solutions to solve social issues are critical for future development.
Limited facilities
When compared with larger airports, Gaggal Airport provides basic amenities. While adequate for current traffic, expanding amenities such as parking, restaurants, and shopping options would enhance the passenger experience and cater for prospective growth.
Weather dependence
The airport, which is located in the mountains, is open to weather disruptions such as fog and strong winds. This can result in flight cancellations and delays, affecting travel plans and accuracy.
Remote location
While surrounded by breathtaking scenery, the airport’s distance from the major towns in Himachal Pradesh may be inconvenient for some visitors. Improved roads and public transportation could help to close this gap.
Environmental concerns
Expanding the airport without considering the environmental impact could jeopardise the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Sustainable solutions and responsible development are critical to balancing progress and environmental protection.
