Ganga Expressway in UP likely to open before schedule

All you need to know about Ganga Expressway

June 12, 2023: The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has asked developers of the Meerut-Prayagraj Ganga Expressway to complete the work on the 595-km project by December 2024 so that it can be operational before the 2025 Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Mela, according to media reports. The project, which is being developed at an estimated cost of over Rs 36,000 crore, was expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The state has permitted the usage of fly ash to overcome the shortage of soil in construction. This will not only cut carbon footprint and provide environmentally amenable disposal but also expedite the project.

The expressway is expected to offer faster passenger and cargo movements and bolster industrial corridors, agricultural marketing value chains and tourism circuits along its route. UP industrial development minister Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi has asked the officials to ramp up equipment and manpower.

The minister said the upcoming expressway would facilitate easy travel during the Maha Kumbh Mela that is likely to host nearly 400 million tourists. The state government has estimated a budget of Rs 6,800 crore for the Maha Kumbh Mela.

In December 2021, Prime minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the expressway project. Developed on the Public-private partnership(PPP) model, the 602-km expressway will run through 12 districts – Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahar, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj. The access-controlled six-lane expressway will be implemented into four groups with three packages each.
