Windows are an integral component of a house or any structure as they provide ventilation and outside views while providing protection and enhancing the aesthetics of a room. If you are undertaking a house construction project or just want to replace your old windows, it is important to understand how to install a window correctly. You should also be aware of the broad types of windows available, which include new construction windows and remodel or replacement windows.

Types of windows
Remodel windows: A remodel window is designed to fit within a finished opening with an existing window frame, unlike a new window installed in a rough opening. Thus, it is quicker and easier to install a remodel window.
New-construction windows: A new-construction window comes with a nailing flange to be fixed to a rough opening. They are installed during the construction of a house or when rebuilding walls during renovation.
Tips for selecting windows
- When selecting a new window, make sure its size is around 3/4 inches smaller than the existing window opening in the house. This will prevent the need to reframe the opening.
- There are different windows available based on material and design.
- Go for vinyl and metal windows, as they have a nailing flange that keeps water out.
- In case you are installing a new window in the house, it will involve cleaning out the window reveals and removing the brick moulding. Additional insulation and sealing may be required.
Measure the window opening
Before you start installing a replacement window, it is advisable to measure the pocket opening. Find out the accurate measurement of your window, including the height and width.
- Measure the window’s height inside the frame at three places – in the middle of a window, on the left and right side. Measure the frame height from where the lower sash (pane) contacts the sill to the top of the frame.
- Measure from one side to the other side of the inner window frame. Do not include stop moulding. Stop moulding is the component that holds the window within the frame.
Remove existing window
If windows are installed on the upper floor, ensure you get the required help to manoeuvre rather than just using a ladder. When fixing windows, wearing eye protection and cut-resistant gloves is necessary, especially if there are jagged glass edges in damaged windows.
- Cut through old paint or caulk, connecting the stop moulding to the window frame.
- Remove interior stop moulding as it may be reusable.
- If there are thin, sharp metal channels, pry the metal loose from the frame.
- Remove the fasteners that hold the old window to the frame. Use a cordless drill or manual screwdriver.
- Lift out the old windows in two parts.
- Remove any balance lines or window weight connections and the old balance system.
- The inner side of the frame should be smooth. Clean the window opening and scrape the old caulk.
- Use fibreglass insulation to fill holes in the surface. Use wood putty to fill holes or dents.
Dry fit the window
Inspect the exterior stop moulding (blind stop) to check if it is damaged or decayed. Replace it if required. Fit the new window into the opening. Support it with wood blocks and shims. Use cordless drill and run screws into the window opening through the shims.
Install the window
In the next step, install the remodel window in the window opening. Before starting this step, apply caulk to the inside face of the exterior stop moulding (blind).
- Fix the window in the opening and press it securely against the caulk.
- Place shims where pre-drilled holes are to secure the window.
- Ensure the window is square by measuring the window diagonals. Adjust with shims if required.
- Run screws into holes through the shims and into the window frame.
- Trim off the shims and break off flush with the frame.
- Choose fibreglass insulation to fill gaps between window jambs and framing members.
- Fix interior stop moulding with finishing nails.
- Once the caulk dries, paint the window trim.
