Prime the canvas

The next step is to prime the canvas with gesso; this creates a smooth and even base and makes your artwork durable. The primer helps the paint adhere better and prevents it from seeping into the surface.

Add layers

Use modelling paste or putty to create visible textures on your canvas. Go creative and use a palette knife, brushes or your fingers to apply the paste and create unique patterns and shapes. Add decorative pieces such as flowers, leaves, twigs, fabric and paper to add more depth.  Let the paste dry completely. The drying time depends upon the type and amount of medium you used for the artwork. You can even add more layers and textures if desired.

Add colours

Paint the layers with different colours and blending techniques. Create highlights and shadows by using lighter and darker shades. Apply multiple layers of paint or texture mediums, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next. Once you are done with the painting process, let the paint dry.

Apply varnish

For the final step, apply a protective coat of varnish or a sealant to protect your artwork and give it a professional finish. This coat will give your art piece more durability and shine.
