How to register for income tax e-filing?

ITR login registration process

To start income tax e-filing login, you should first register yourself on the portal. In this section, we explain the process.

Step 1: On the ITR e filing portal, click on the Register Yourself button.

Step 2: Enter your PAN and validate it. If your PAN is not registered on the e-filing portal, an error message will be displayed.

 

Step 3: Provide all the details and click on Continue.

Step 4: Provide the necessary contact details and click on ‘Continue’.

Step 5: Two six-digit OTPs will be shared on your mobile number and email ID. Input them in the designated fields.

Step 6: Carefully check all the details and make changes, if needed. If all the details are correct, click on ‘Confirm‘.

 

 

Step 7: Select a password.

  1. Your password should have minimum 8 and maximum 14 characters.
  2. At least one letter in your password must be in upper case and lower case.
  3. IT should have at least one number.
  4. IT should have at least one special character.

Step 8: You are now registered to use ITR login on the income tax e filing portal. Click on ‘Proceed to Login’.

ITR login: Step-wise process

Step 1: Go to the income tax e filing website and click on the ‘Login’ option.

 

 

Step 2: Enter either your PAN number or Aadhaar number or the user ID.

 

 

Step 3: Once you input one of the details, the ‘Continue’ button would get activated.

 

 

Step 4: Enter your password and click on ‘Continue’.

 

 

Step 5: Next, you could opt for a text message or a voice call to verify yourself through the registered mobile number.

 

 

Step 6: Input the verification code and click on ‘Login’.

 

 

Step 7: Your ITR login is successful.

Penalty for late filing of income tax return

Those required to file ITR under Section 139 of the I-T law are liable to pay interest on the due tax if they do not follow the ITR filing last date. Late filing fees of Rs 5,000 is payable if the ITR is filed after the due date specified. The I-T department can also charge 50% penalty of tax payable. In serious cases, one can be sent to a jail for a period of up to three years.
