The Infinity Bridge, a remarkable addition to Dubai’s transportation, opened to the public on January 16, 2022. As a prominent feature of the Al Shindagha Corridor Project, the bridge connects the Al Shindagha and Al Ras districts. Over 13 km long, 55 m wide and 15.5 m above water, it spans Dubai Creek.

With an impressive 12-lane capacity and pedestrian crossings, the Infinity Bridge has replaced the Al Shindagha tunnel as the primary route for vehicular movement between the Bur Dubai and Deira areas. The bridge roughly cost $1.44 billion and is crowned by a 42-m-high steel arch, shaped like the mathematical symbol of infinity. Its strategic design allows the smooth flow of approximately 24,000 vehicles in both directions every hour, ensuring efficient transportation and connectivity for the city.

Infinity Bridge: Construction

The construction of the Infinity Bridge began with thorough geological studies to identify the optimal foundation for the bridge. Deep foundation techniques were employed, utilising large caissons securely anchored into the seabed, providing a solid base for the bridge’s pillars.

To support the bridge’s weight and withstand external forces, a combination of steel and reinforced concrete was employed. Tensioned steel cables were strategically incorporated to provide structural stability while reinforced concrete pillars and beams were utilised to balance flexibility and rigidity. This careful combination of materials ensured the bridge’s strength and durability, enabling it to safely accommodate the heavy flow of traffic and pedestrians. The construction of the bridge deck was completed within a remarkable timeframe of just 8 months.

 

Infinity Bridge: Design

The innovative bridge design encompassed marine works. A vessel navigation channel was carefully designed to ensure safe passage under the bridge while navigation aids were strategically implemented for guidance. Pier protection structures were developed to safeguard the bridge piers and the steel infinity arch from potential collisions with or impacts of waterborne vessels in Dubai Creek.

Other aspects comprised the design of scour protection measures, hydrodynamic numerical modelling studies, flushing studies and environmental impact assessments. Advanced computer simulations and precise calculations played a vital role in the design process, ensuring optimal performance and safety. The thorough attention to detail and utilisation of cutting-edge techniques guaranteed the successful integration of these marine components into the overall project.

During the night, the bridge is illuminated with multi-coloured lights. Equipped with a state-of-the-art LED lighting system, its contours are highlighted by the lighting, creating a visually appealing sight. Dynamic patterns and vibrant colours enhance the bridge’s aesthetic appeal.
