Kochi Municipal Corporation: History

During the second half of the nineteenth century, three municipalities existed in the Cochin area namely Fort Cochin, Mattancherry, and Ernakulam were the three at the time. Fort Cochin was incorporated as a municipality on November 1, 1866. In 1896, the Maharaja of Cochin formed separate boards for Mattancherry and Ernakulam and local administration was established in these areas.
