April 24, 2024: The Kochi Water Metro, connecting the High Court and Fort Kochi, began its operations on April 21, 2024, drawing several tourists and commuters, according to media reports. The Kochi Water Metro project was formally inaugurated by Prime minister Narendra Modi and its commercial operation started in April 2023. There are 15 routes planned as part of this project.
Kochi Water Metro details
The new metro line will have services every 20 to 30 minutes and the trip will take about 20 minutes. The cost of each ticket is Rs 40. The water metro ferries have electric-hybrid technology and air conditioning. In addition to the single-journey tickets, the Water Metro will also have weekly, monthly and quarterly passes. Earlier, the Water Metro started sailing with eight electric-hybrid boats in two routes.

According to a New Indian Express report, Fort Kochi is now the Water Metro network’s 10th terminal. Cochin Shipyard Limited has given Kochi Water Metro Kochi Water Metro Ltd (KWML) ownership of 14 of the 23 ferries in total. The authorities are expecting to get the remaining boats by June 2024.
The Kochi Water Metro project has been planned with 15 identified routes, connecting ten islands along a network of routes that cover 78 km with a fleet of 78 fast, electrically propelled hybrid ferries plying to 38 jetties. More than 33,000 islanders are expected to benefit from the water metro, according to the official Kochi Water Metro website.
