Bandra Linking Road: Street Shopping Experience

After the construction of RD National College near the street, fashion shops began to flourish, spawning many new stores. Since then, the road has become a centre of attention for its nightlife and cheap shopping.

Linking Road is Mumbai’s one major highway. In the early 1940s, the Linking road connected Juhu and Bandra. When it was built, it was called Dadabhai Naoroji Road.

Why is this market so famous?

Linking Road started as something other than a shopper’s paradise. Several shops popped up along the street in the next ten years after construction. After the construction of RD National College near the street, fashion shops began to flourish, spawning many new stores.

Since then, the road has become a centre of attention for its nightlife and cheap shopping.

How to reach the Linking road market?

Once in Mumbai, access to the Linking Road is relatively easy. Mumbai has many markets, but Linking Road is an important market, and Bandra is a central residential area. Therefore, finding your way to the market will be easy.

By train

Opt for the local train if you are looking for a cheap way to get to the market. The nearest metro station is Bandra West Railway Station. The market is just a 15-minute walk from the train station.

Exit the station and turn right. After crossing the intersection, the street market begins. The market area is very crowded, and you can walk to the market area much faster than taking road transport from the subway station.

By road

You can find cars and rickshaws in front of the station for trips to the market. Drivers will ask for at least Rs 50 but negotiate for Rs 25 or 30 if visiting during the low tourist season. During the tourist season, the price can be Rs 50 or more.

Cars and rickshaws are tough to find during the rainy season; even if you find one, the service is costly.

By car

If departing from Central Mumbai or North Mumbai, choose NH8, which covers the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. There is a shopping area on the right side of SV Road. It is better to rent cars as the parking space is usually filled.

By bus

The nearest bus stop is on Linking Road if you travel by bus. You can find buses from Mumbai Central Bus Station, SV Road, Elphinstone Road, Sahar Road, etc.

It may be convenient to take a bus to the connecting road, but when you return from shopping, it will be challenging to get on a crowded bus full of luggage. Buses get even more crowded during the rainy season.

Timings for Linking Road market

The market is open from 10 am to 9 pm. Opening and closing times for each shop vary by seller. Shops may open slightly earlier and close after 9 pm during festivals and weekends.

Best time to visit the Linking Road market

The market is full of new products all year round. But you have to walk through the streets of shops in and out of alleys, and the crowds here are inexplicable. You might get sweaty and uncomfortable if you come in the summer (late February to mid-June). During weekends and festivals, the place becomes chaotic.

The rainy season (late June to early October) is another challenging time, as the roads can be messy, and surfing can be demanding when it is raining. Mumbai is a coastal area, so monsoons can be moderately strong. It is challenging to secure a means of transportation during the rainy season.

Winter is the best time to travel. Winter begins at the end of November and ends in February with clear skies and low humidity. This creates a comfortable atmosphere where you can shop for as long as possible.
