Muddu Raja, a king of the Haleri dynasty, formed Madikeri in 1681 and named it Muddu Rajakeri, which afterwards became Madikeri. The British who governed Madikeri referred to it as Mercara.
How to reach Madikeri?
- By air: There is no airport in Madikeri. Book a flight to Mangalore, which serves most domestic routes, along with Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Vizag, and Bengaluru. From the airport, there are numerous buses and taxis that will begin taking you to Madikeri. The journey from Mangalore Main Airport to Madikeri takes roughly 3-4 hours.
- By train: Since Madikeri lacks a railway station, there are no trains running to the town. Travelling by train from Madurai to Subrahmanya or Hassan and then taking a cab or bus to Madikeri is an option. Subrahmanya is approximately 74 kilometres from Madikeri, and Hassan is approximately 103 kilometres. Another option is to take the train to Mysore and then take a KSRTC bus or taxi to Madikeri. This could be less expensive than taking a flight.
- By road: Madikeri is easily accessible from all surrounding cities. KSRTC, tourist buses, and cabs can take you to Madikeri from Mangalore, Mysuru, or even Bengaluru. You could also drive yourself to Madikeri. If you’re driving, make a point of stopping at Bylakuppe, Nisargadhama, and Kushalnagar along the way. The journey from Thrissur to Madikeri takes roughly 2-3 hours.
