Madurai Metro to link international airport under Phase 2

Coimbatore metro rail project allotted Rs 9,000 cr

A metro station at Madurai international airport connecting the city will be planned under the second phase of the Madurai Metro Rail project, according to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited Managing Director M A Siddique. Construction of the metro is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The Madurai Metro railway project will be implemented with a vision of 100 years, he said.

Note that, in November 2022, the CMRL submitted a detailed feasibility report (DFR) to the state government for the Metro project, which has been approved.

Of the 31 km section from Thirumangalam to Othakadai, 26 kilometres will be constructed as an elevated route and five kilometres will be underground. The route from Goripalayam to Vasantha Nagar in front of Meenakshi Amman temple will be tunnelled under the Vaigai River. Bores will be dug every two kilometres on the Metro route, while soil and seepage tests will be carried out before the DPR.

At present, there are 14 stations planned on the elevated route and four stations underground. A Metro station will be developed to connect the Madurai railway station, Periyar bus stand and Meenakshi Amman Temple. As per the DPR, apart from the Othakadai – Thirumanagalam line, two additional routes have been identified – Airport to Kattupulinagar and Manalur to Nagamala Pudukottai, CMRL MD said.

The Madurai Metro project will be implemented at the cost of Rs 8,500 crore project with central and state governments contributing 20% each and external financial institutions contributing 60%.
