The Maharashtra government is set to implement a ‘Streets With Cycle Track’ policy in 10 districts of the state, on a pilot basis, to provide an alternate mode of transport to locals.
The project will include the cities of Pune, Nagpur, Amravati, Chandrapur, Kolhapur, Solapur, Nashik, Latur, Aurangabad and Jalgaon, according to a GR (Government Resolution) issued by the government on July 29, 2017. The GR stated that the concept would be implemented on a pilot basis, which would enable employees travelling around 7-8 kms to their work place daily, to use cycles as an alternate option of commuting. There are no dedicated cycle tracks in most of the cities in Maharashtra. Hence, people do not dare to use cycles to commute to the work place, the GR said.

In many cities, the labour class travel 7-8 kms to industrial towns. If the existing major roads get parallel cycle tracks, some of the load on roads can shift. It would also reduce traffic congestion and keep a check on pollution, it stated.
