What’s causing the delay in the Konkan Expressway completion?
The Konkan Expressway project has encountered several delays due to various challenges:
- Environmental concerns: The project has delayed obtaining necessary environmental clearances, mainly due to its proximity to eco-sensitive zones.
- Land acquisition hurdles: Securing land for the expressway has been a significant challenge, leading to project delays.
- Contractor performance issues: Subpar work by contractors has resulted in project delays, necessitating reassignments and further prolonging completion timelines.
- Regulatory and legal challenges: The Bombay High Court has expressed concerns over initiating new projects like the Konkan Expressway without completing existing ones, such as the Mumbai-Goa Highway, leading to legal hurdles and delays.
- Political and administrative factors: Political disagreements and administrative inefficiencies have contributed to the project’s slow progress, affecting decision-making and coordination.
How to travel from Sindhudurg to Goa? Best routes and estimated time
since the expressway terminates in Sindhudurg, travellers aiming for Goa will need to cover the remaining distance through alternative routes.

Konkan Expressway travel time
The Konkan Expressway will reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Goa to about 8 hours. The approximate time for motorists to commute between the two states is 12 hours. The shorter travel time is mainly due to the expected reduction in the journey between Mumbai and Sindhudurg from 10 to 8 hours once the Konkan Expressway is completed.
Tunnels and bridges
The Konkan Expressway will bring significant infrastructure elements, such as tunnels and bridges, to navigate the difficult terrain of the Konkan region. The Konkan Expressway will feature approximately 41 tunnels and 21 major bridges. Additionally, the route will have 41 smaller bridges across various districts.
Estimated cost
According to reports, an estimated Rs 68,000 Cr is set for the construction of the Konkan Expressway. This covers the acquisition cost of approximately 3,792 hectares of land. Of this, approximately 146 hectares are under the jurisdiction of the forest department.
Is Konkan expressway a part of Mumbai Goa highway?
The Konkan Expressway is a proposed six-lane, access-controlled highway designed to connect Panvel in Navi Mumbai to Sindhudurg, passing through the districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri. This expressway aims to reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Goa to approximately six hours.
In contrast, the existing Mumbai-Goa Highway, known as National Highway 66 (NH-66), is currently undergoing expansion to a four-lane configuration. This highway also connects Mumbai to Goa but follows a different route compared to the proposed Konkan Expressway.
Therefore, the Konkan Expressway is not a part of the existing Mumbai-Goa Highway; rather, it is a separate, planned infrastructure project intended to provide an alternative and faster route between Mumbai and Goa.
Intersection points of Konkan Expressway with Mumbai-Goa highway
The Konkan Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH-66) are distinct routes designed to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Goa. While they are separate, there are planned intersections to facilitate smoother travel.
Key intersection points:
- Near Shitole Village: The Konkan Expressway will follow NH-66 near Shitole up to the Dharamtar Creek near Shahabaj village.
- Multiple Interchanges: The expressway will feature 14 interchanges along its route, intersecting with NH-66 at various points to ensure seamless transitions between the two highways.

While there has been no official announcement of a completion date, the much-awaited project is set for completion in June 2025.
Why is Konkan Expressway important?
The Konkan Expressway is one of the much-awaited projects that is being built to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Goa. As the route has heavy traffic, currently it takes between 12-14 hours to travel to Goa from Mumbai via the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH 66).
Once complete, the Konkan Expressway will cut down this travel time to 6 hours. It will reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Sindhudurg from 6 to 3 hours, significantly speeding up the commute between the two states. The Expressway will enhance connectivity to smaller towns and villages in the Konkan region, which will boost trade in the region, which is popular for its agriculture and fisheries.
Difference between Mumbai goa expressway and Konkan expressway
The Mumbai-Goa Expressway and Konkan Expressway are often confused, but they are different:
- Mumbai-Goa Expressway is a proposed dedicated high-speed corridor to reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Goa to 6 hours. It will primarily follow a more inland route, focusing on fast connectivity.
- Konkan Expressway is a separate project planned along the Konkan coast, offering both faster travel and scenic views, connecting key coastal towns. Unlike the Mumbai-Goa Expressway, which focuses on quick transit, it is designed to promote tourism along the coastline.
