January 8, 2024: Phase-1 of the Mumbai Coastal Road from Marine Drive to the Bandra Worli Sea Link will not attract any toll, Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde said on January 7.
To be named the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Motorway, the road stretches around 29 km, and connects South Mumbai to western suburbs. The project is divided into two phases with phase-1 from Marine Drive to Bandra Worli Sea Link and phase-2 from end of Bandra Worli Sea Link to Kandivali.
Speaking to the media, Shinde said that after the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), phase-I of the Mumbai Coastal Road would be opened for common people by the end of January. The construction work for the phase-1 between Marine Drive and Worli that comprises the undersea tunnel will be completed by January 31, soon after which it will be opened for motorists.
He added that phase-2 of the road will be completed by May 31, 2024, after which the entire corridor will be operational.
Note that the MTHL will be inaugurated on January 12, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will connect Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle Village in Navi Mumbai, and will attract a toll of Rs 250 for one way by car.
