Bangalore Peripheral Ring Road: Know more about the construction undertaken by BDA

March 13, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two crucial stretches of Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) on March 11, according to media reports. The two sections of the ring road are the 42-kilometre (km) Dobbaspet–Doddaballapur bypass section of NH-648 and the 37.6-km Doddaballapur bypass–Hoskote section of NH-648. The cost of construction is Rs 1,438 crore for the first section and Rs 1,317 crore for the second section.

As cited in a Moneycontrol report, NHAI officials said that the STRR will provide a bypass route for goods traffic, allowing commercial vehicles to avoid entering the core city areas of the city.

As per the report, NHAI project director KB Jayakumara said that toll collection for the Doddaballapur bypass–Hoskote began in November 2023 and toll collection for the Dobbaspet–Doddaballapur section will commence shortly. The rest of the areas along the STRR are expected to benefit commuters, he said.

Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road project details

The Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road covers a length of 288 km (NH 948A), which is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the city. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is executing the project at an estimated cost of Rs 17,000 crore.

STRR will serve as an alternative route to the Kempegowda International Airport for those coming from Hoskote, Kolar, Chittoor and Hosur. However, STRR westside sections from Hosur to Kanakapura, Ramanagara, Magadi and Dobbaspet are still in the tendering stage.

The STRR project was proposed in 2005. In 2017, it became part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana and gained momentum. PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the STRR in June 2022. It is being executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).

Around 60% of the project’s cost will be borne by the NHAI, the remaining 40% will be borne by the Karnataka Government.

The project is divided into nine sections. Construction is underway in four sections, while contracts for the remaining sections are yet to be awarded.
