To provide better civilian transportation access, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) a 31.5 km long metro route known as the Red Line.
The Red Line is connected to other metro lines, bus and suburban rail services through multiple interchanges. The official colour of this line was announced on February 28, 2020 as a branding exercise to establish style guidelines.

Comprising both underground and elevated metro lines, the Red Line Metro Route in Mumbai- Line 7, 7A, 9 is 31.5 Km long with 23 station stops (7 elevated and three underground approved, and 14 elevated under-construction).
The Red Line Metro Route will allow travel from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2, Mira Bhayandar, Dahisar East and Andheri East with 23 stations. These stations include significant stops in the city as well.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mumbai Metro 2 A and Red Line 7 on January 19, 2023. All the stations in the Red Line route are elevated. The Red Line route spanning 16.4 km and connecting Dahisar (East) to Gundavali and Andheri (East) helps reduce traffic in the Western Express Highway. Covering 14 stops, the Line 7 was made fully operational on January 20, 2023.

The Mumbai Metro Red Line 9 was supposed to be an independent line between Andheri and Dahisar. However, later the Maharashtra state government decided to develop it as an extension to the Mumbai Metro Line 7.

Mumbi Metro Red Line 9 status
The Mumbai Metro Red Line 9 was supposed to be operational by December but delay in construction has pushed the operations to June 2025. The Mumbai Metro Red Line is around 87% complete as on January 2025, according to media reports. The Mumbai Metro 9 car shed will be built on a hill in Uttan on a plot measuring approximately 59.65 h.

Red line metro route Mumbai: Construction information
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in 2015, signed a deal with MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) as the interim consultant for line 7’s development. In 2019, they established a new department called MMOCL (Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation) to maintain and overlook all the metro route services under it.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and New Development Bank (NDB) are responsible for financing the project under ODA loans. In October 2015, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone, and the project began.
To add more routes in the entire line, in September 2018, Maharashtra’s government gave the green light to extend the metro routes to CSIA Terminal 2 (line 7A) and Mira Bhayandar (line 9), the total cost of which was Rs 6,518 crore.

Mumbai Metro: Status of Red Line Metro
- The Red Line Metro Mumbai’s construction contract for Dongri Depot has been granted. This is part of CA 207 package.
- Dongri Depot will be spread across 41.36 hectare.
- Cost of construction tender is around Rs 701.94 crore.
- Dongri Depot will stable and maintain Red Line 7, 7A and 9.
- It will include depot control centre, two auxillary sub stations, receiving substation, administrative building, stabling shed, inspection shed, operational control station, a 690 m test rack.
- The construction contract will also include architectural finishing and work related to plumbing.
