Satyanarayan pooja is a way of showing gratitude and seeking blessings from Lord Vishnu, the protector and preserver of the universe. The pooja is traditionally performed on auspicious occasions such as weddings, housewarming ceremonies and birthdays. It consists of Satyanarayan pooja and Katha (Story). The Katha is broadly divided into 5 Adhyays (chapters) and mainly emphasises the importance of telling and following the truth and includes the conversation between Devarshi Narad and Lord Vishnu. The Satyanarayan form of Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the pooja.

Satyanarayan pooja: Significance
It is believed that Devarshi Narad showed his concern in front of Lord Vishnu regarding the people on earth living in Kal Yuga (The last period of the time cycle in Hinduism, after which the world is destined to end). Narad Ji asked for a method by which the people on earth can connect with God and seek his blessings.
As a reply, Lord Vishnu told him the significance of Satyanarayan pooja as the simplest way to connect with the divine, as its result is equivalent to a thousand years of Havan. It is believed that performing this pooja with devotion and sincerity can bring peace, prosperity and happiness to one’s life.

Satyanarayan pooja: Rituals
- The host wakes up early in the morning and pledges to host the Satyanarayan pooja and fast after taking a proper bath. Fasting here means only speaking the truth and not consuming any meal until the Katha is over and the Brahmins are served. People on medication can skip the fast as the main fragment of the fast is to stay loyal towards truth.
- In the evening, Brahmins are invited, and Shree Satyanarayan pooja is performed. The story (Katha) should be listened to attentively, and the pooja should be done with sincerity and devotion.
