All about State Institute of Urban Development

With the aim of bringing about comprehensive urban development, the State Institute of Urban Development (SIUD) was set up by the Urban Development Department in Mysore in 1999. This prestigious institution is registered under the Karnataka Societies Act, 1960.

With a vision of making sure of good urban governance through research and capacity building, the SIUD works in tandem with the Administrative Training Institute (ATI), and is also located in its campus. It’s state-of-the-art training facilities attend to urban requirements by way of research, training, consultancy and capacity building. In other words, it aids in recreating urban management knowhow and developing sustainable cities.

State Institute of Urban Development: Key responsibilities

The SIUD works as a centre of excellence by facilitating the urban problem management in sync with needs of the developing cities. Its role includes designing trainee programs on urban development and management, enhancing stakeholders’ skills to address the ongoing challenges in urban development and incorporating changes at all functionary levels for smooth and uninterrupted developments in urban areas.

The SIUD is also required to be in constant communication with the state government on matters related to urban policy. It is also responsible to systematise programmes that are sponsored by the state and the central government.

The SIUD is also responsible for providing proper guidance in planning and designing of cities and its infrastructure using skill sets that are region specific, thus having a positive impact.  Additionally, it also has to provide reorientation programmes to field functionaries, elected representatives and officers to educate them of their roles and responsibilities.
