Story 88: Vintage | Houses of India

As we work our way through the busy streets of Ujjain, we come across an 80-year-old architectural gem, belonging to Manak Hussain Sandalwala and Fida Hussain Sandalwala.

Once you enter this sprawling house, the first thing that catches your eye is the elongated staircase and multi-coloured window made from vintage glass, with geometric patterns.ย For a moment, it steers you away from the hustle of everyday life and transcends you into the bygone era.

As you walk further in, the rooms and the passages the house seem to tell many stories.ย The house is constructed, based on Jaipur architecture and this influence is evident on the cupboards, mirrors, swing and cutlery.

The ancestral swing in the common area, is something which is very dear to both, Fida and Manak.

Hues of green set the mood in the house and is reflected in every corner of their home.

The balcony of the house is where they spend their evening, reminiscing about their ancestors and children, who have lived with them in the house.

The house, to them, is much more than a reservoir of memory โ€“ it is their solace, filled with tranquillity.
