TMC begins demolition of dilapidated buildings, ahead of rains

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), May 24, 2017, initiated work on pulling down all dilapidated buildings in the city, ahead of the monsoons, beginning with 63 structures that have been categorised as the ‘most dangerous’ to live in. TMC commissioner Sanjiv Jaiswal reviewed the preparedness of the civic body before the onset of the rainy season, including demolition of dilapidated buildings under its limits.

The Commissioner was apprised that there are a total of 3,693 buildings in the city that fall under various categories of ‘dangerous’, ‘most dangerous’, ‘dilapidated’ and needs to demolished, a press release issued by the TMC said. As many as 69 building fall under ‘C1 category’ (most dangerous) and need to be vacated and pulled down immediately, it said. Jaiswal said these 69 buildings should be pulled down at the earliest and should be completed within the stipulated time frame. The work on razing these structures began today.

A total of 91 structures fall under ‘C1 B’ (dangerous) category. The commissioner also directed ward level employees to compile the details of buildings falling under C2B and C3 categories and submit it to seniors in their respective wards at the earliest. The meeting also discussed disaster management plans and measures to fill potholes before the onset of the monsoons.
