The Valiyazheekkal Bridge, an iconic transport network, connects Alappuzha and Kollam in Kerala. It is recognised as the second- longest bowstring bridge in all of Asia. The bridge is 1.23-km long, which includes the 250-m approach roads. The three bowstring arches in the middle of the bridge are its main feature. Similar to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the bridge has been painted using a combination of orange and cream colours.
The bridge is an important link for both locals and tourists. The local population relied primarily on ferries before the bridge was built to cross the lake. Time spent travelling has been cut down, and connectivity to the city centre has improved because of the construction of this bridge. It has also significantly boosted the local economy by increasing tourism and business prospects in the region.
The natural beauty of this bridge makes it more than just a means of transit; it has also made it a popular tourist destination for people visiting the area to take in the serenity and beauty of the Ashtamudi Lake.
Valiyazheekkal Bridge: How to reach?
To go to the bridge from Kollam, you can either take a taxi or rent a private vehicle. It will be a one-and-a-hour-hour drive from here to cover the 40-km distance.
