Visakhapatnam, which is the largest city and an economic hub in Andhra Pradesh, will witness the development of a rapid transit system that will reduce traffic congestion and boost real estate developments. The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) is undertaking the Vizag Metro. Media reports cited APMRC managing director UJM Rao, who stated that the agency has submitted the final DPR (Detailed Project Report) for the proposed project and work is expected to begin soon.

Corridor 1
A 64.09-kilometre (km) section under the Visakhapatnam Metro project will connect Steel plant and Kommadi, covering 31 km.
After the completion of Bhogapuram International Airport, the Vizag Metro network will be expanded to ease connectivity for commuters travelling to and from the airport.

Vizag Metro project cost
The metro project will be developed under the supervision of the Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) with joint efforts by the Central and state governments and IL&FS Engineering and Construction. The project will receive funding of 20% from the Central government as Viability Gap Funding (VGF), 20% from the state government contributing another 20% while the remaining funding will be from private investors through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

- The Visakhapatnam Metro is being developed to make it the most eco-friendly to ensure the carbon print levels almost to ‘Zero’.
- The project is planned with greenery alongside the track.
- Moreover, Solar PV panels will be installed at station roof tops, depots boundary walls, service building’s roof tops, parking shelters, on viaduct, etc. to make self-sustainability for electric general services.
- The stations will be designed to meet Platinum rating criteria as per Indian Green Building Council norms.
