Maharashtra to cut electricity tariffs by 26% over 5 years
Power tariffs in Maharashtra will be slashed by 26% in five years, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on June 25, 2025. Fadnavis also holds the energy portfolio in the state.
“For the first time in the history of the state, electricity rates will be reduced by 10% in the first year and 26% in five years in phases. We are grateful to the Maharashtra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for giving this verdict on the petition of Mahavitaran,”Fadnavis posted on social media platform X.
Earlier, petitions for a 10% increase in electricity tariffs were submitted to MERC. But, for the first time in the history of the state, Mahavitaran filed a petition to reduce electricity tariffs which was accepted by the MERC, he added.
The order will cover all three categories of domestic, industrial and commercial consumers. The chief minister said, for 70% of consumers using less than 100 units of electricity, the maximum rate reduction of 10% will be achieved.

To calculate the electricity charges in Maharashtra:
1) Consumption slab: Identify the consumption slab by knowing the electricity units that have been consumed in the billing period.
2) Tariff rates: After identifying the consumption slab, apply the tariff rates. Each slab has a per unit charge- LT-IA, LT- IB, LT-IC.
3) Calculate energy charges: Multiply the number of units in each slab by corresponding per-unit tariff rate.
4) Fixed charges: Once this is added, add the fixed charges
5) Electricity duty: The total number of units should be multiplied by the electricity duty rate.
6) Customer charges: This has to be added based on the consumption slab.
7) Total charges: Add all the above mentioned charges.
8) Minimum charges: Check the minimum charges mentioned by the electricity board and see if the above total is more than the minimum charges.
9) Total bill: Check for previous penalties, convenience charges etc. and add to the total bill and give the final bill.

If the electricity connection is cut because of non-payment of bill, defaulters have to pay the penalty, electricity bill and reconnection charges of Rs 210 plus 18% GST.
