Ramanathapuram is a district, also called the Ramnad district, which ranks among the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu. The old city has Sivagangai and Virudhunagar districts. It also touches Western ghats, shares borders with Kerala, and has the Bay of Bengal towards the east. It happens to be the largest district, spread over 4123 square kilometres.
It has Sivaganga district on its north, Pudukkottai District on its northeast, Palk Strait on its east, the Gulf of Mannar towards the south, Thoothukudi District on its west, and the Virudhunagar District towards the northwest. With a total of 1,353,445 populace, this district is home to the famous centre of Rameswaram. The district has 11 blocks, 429 village panchayats, 2 divisions, 9 taluks and 4 municipalities.
