India’s richest municipal body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) presented the Budget for FY 23-24 on February 4, 2023. Crossing the Rs 50,000-crore mark for the first time, the BMC budget estimate for FY 23-24 is Rs 52,619 crore. The proposed Budget is 14.52% more than that of FY 22-23, which was Rs 45,949 crore. The four pillars of the BMC Budget 2023-24 are health, education, environment and transparent working.
Budget highlights
Infrastructure
Infrastructure has been allotted a major share of the budget. The BMC budget has allotted Rs 27,248 crore towards capital expenditure and Rs 25,305.94 crore towards revenue expenditure.
Coastal road project
The coastal road project has been allotted Rs 3,545 crore and the project is expected to be completed by 2023 end.
Goregaon-Mulund Link road project
The GMLR has been allotted Rs 1,060 crore, which will reduce the time taken to travel from Thane to Goregaon.
Other road projects and traffic maintenance
Rs 2,825 crore has been allotted which will include concretisation of roads.
Environment
The BMC also has plans to install five air purifiers at the Dahisar toll naka, the Mulund check naka, the Haji ali junction, Mankhurd and Kala Nagar. The municipal body aspires to achieve ‘Net Zero’ and has set up a dedicated Climate Action Plan Cell to make this true. It is also constructing electric charging systems at various public parking places.
Health
The BMC has allotted Rs 6,309 crore towards health.
