BMC floats fresh tenders for twin underground tunnels under GMLR project

To be completed in four phases, the 12 km long GMLR will connect the Western Express Highway at Goregaon and the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund.

Fresh tenders have been floated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for construction of 4.7 km long two underground tunnels below the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) that are part of the approximately Rs 8,000 crore Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. BMC had scrapped the previous tenders three weeks back.  Initially pegged at around Rs 4,600 crore, the project’s value has increased to around Rs 8000 crore now.

To be completed in four phases, the 12 km long GMLR will connect the Western Express Highway at Goregaon and the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund.

The first phase that has already started is the widening of the Nahur road Railway Over Bridge (ROB) to 4 X 4 lane which presently is 1×1 lane. This project is estimated at around Rs 202.3 crore.

The second phase will involve widening of the road along the proposed twin underground tunnel to 45.70 meters. This project is estimated around more than Rs 130 crore. 

Phase three of the GMLR project has been divided into two sub-projects- with the first sub project containing ‘Design and Construction of Flyovers and Elevated Rotary along the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road’ This phase consists of Design and Construction of Flyovers and Elevated Rotary along Goregaon-Mulund Link Road at Junction near Ratnagiri Hotel, Goregaon, Elevated Rotary at Junction of GG Singh Road and GMLR and Hedgewar Junction, Mulund. The total cost of this component is Rs.666.06 crore. The work is in progress and the expected date of completion is Jan 2025.

The second project will include the project of the twin tunnel where the estimated cost of the tunnel including the cut and cover box tunnel is Rs 6,322 crore. The work on the tunnel is expected to start in February 2023.

The fourth phase starts when the underground tunnel is in progress where flyovers of around 1.22 km at Eastern Express Highway with cable stay span and an underpass over Western Express Highway will be constructed.
