Mysore Airport: Infrastructure, connectivity and expansion plans

Airports Authority of India (AAI) has begun the construction of the new Rajkot International Airport at Rajkot. Spread over 1,025-hectare site, the project will cost around Rs 1,405 crore. The airport will serve as a transit hub for citizens planning to undertake international trips and is expected to be operational by December 2023.

The new airport is situated around 30 kilometres from Rajkot on the Rajkot-Ahmadabad route. Presently, being developed, the total built-up area of the terminal building is 23,000 sqm, which can accommodate 1,800 people during peak hours. As per AAI authorities, the terminal will have amenities including four boarding bridges, three conveyor belts, and 20 check-in counters, along with contemporary firefighting and fire alarm systems. Over 95% of the earthwork and paving work for the runway and other areas has been completed.

The runway will cover a length of 3,040 metres, which can accommodate Airbus 321 aircraft, and the apron will have space for 14 aircraft. The airport’s city side area is also being developed to accommodate landscaping and adequate parking spaces for vehicles, taxis and buses. The front of the terminal building incorporates traditional components into a modern shape inspired by Rajkot’s existing palaces, such as Ranjit Vilas Palace. The building interiors will portray numerous art forms including dandiya dance. The outside panel work at the drop-off site of the city side kerb is inspired by Rajkot’s famed golden jewellery and filigree work.
