The Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation Limited (TAHDCO) started off as a construction company in 1974 and went on to undertake a number of schemes meant to enhance the income, skill set and training for the economically backward sections.

Some of the primary responsibilities of the TAHDCO include:

The TAHDCO is headed by a managing director. The development wing of the TAHDCO consists of 32 offices in each of the district headquarters while the construction wing has 10 divisions with two divisions functioning in Chennai. Other divisions include Villupuram, Vellore, Trichy, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Salem and Coimbatore.

Construction activities of TAHDCO

The TAHDCO undertakes construction activities, such as that of schools, hostels, laboratories, residential schools for tribal students, community halls, quarters for teachers, toilets, or any other infrastructure as per requirement.

 

Economic development by TAHDCO

A number of schemes that receive funding as Special Central Assistance (SCA), are implemented by the TAHDCO. The body receives Rs 125 crores annually as the SCA, to execute schemes which include land purchase, entrepreneur development, etc.

Skill development by TAHDCO

The TAHDCO may also, from time to time, receive funds from the Tamil Nadu government, to undertake skill training of the underprivileged and the unskilled. Such skills may be in any field.

Other schemes by TAHDCO

A few years ago, the Tamil Nadu Scavengers Welfare Board was constituted under the chairmanship of the minister for Adi Dravidar and the Tribal Welfare Department. A number of schemes to ensure the welfare of the board’s members may be undertaken from time to time. For example, for the scavenger board members, benefits were announced under various heads. For availing of any of these benefits, members need to contact the district managers of TAHDCO.

SEPY stands for Self Employment Programme for Youth. A financial assistance of Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh is given, to those who wish to pursue medicine or dentistry.
