Blue Line metro in Bangalore: Route, stations, map and latest updates

The Bangalore Metro network, also known as the Namma Metro, is a lifeline for the residents as it connects key localities and far-flung areas of the city. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is developing metro projects and working on the expansion of the metro network to boost connectivity. The upcoming Blue Line of Bangalore Metro, also known as the ORR-Airport Metro Line, is set to ease commuting to the major localities, such as KR Puram, Hebbal and Marathahalli, and the Kempegowda International Airport. The Blue Line of Bangalore Metro is expected to be completed around June 2026. The Namma Metro blue line, spanning a total length of 58.19-km, is being developed in two sections – Phase 2A from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajpura and Phase 2B from Krishnarajpura to Airport. The blue line is mostly elevated and at-grade near the Airport and includes two underground sections covering Jakkur Aerodrome and Yelahanka AFB.

The Namma Metro Blue line provides connectivity to different parts of the city via interchange lines with the Yellow Line at Central Silk Board, Purple Line at KR Pura, Pink Line at Nagawara and with the future /proposed Orange Line at Hebbal.

As per reports, 45% of the civil work on the Blue Line’s Phase 2A and 2B sections, from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajpura and Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has been completed. On the stretch from Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the airport, around 10% of track installation is complete.

BMRCL begins land acquisitions for Namma Metro Phase 3

According to media reports, the BMRCL has initiated the land acquisition process for the much-awaited Namma Metro Phase 3 project. The Phase 3 project of Bangalore Metro includes two corridors – a 32.15-km section from JP Nagar Phase 4 to Kempapura and 12.5-km section from Hosahalli to Kadabagere. The land acquisition will take place in phases.

Connectivity with Pink Line

The metro corridor from Kalena Agrahara (Gottigere) on Bannerghatta Road to Nagawara, which is the Bangalore Metro Pink Line, is expected to open in 2025. The line will be operational in two phases. Phase 1 will include a 7.5-km elevated section from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere (Swagath Cross), to be opened by September 2025. The phase 2 will include a 13.8-km underground line from Dairy Circle to Nagawara, expected to be completed by June 2026.

Connectivity with Yellow Line

The Namma Metro Yellow Line is an 18.82-km line from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road to Bommasandra. The much-awaited line is expected to open in May 2025, providing connectivity to Bangalore Metro blue line via the Central Silk Board station.

What are the train timings on the Bangalore Metro Blue Line?

Metro train services will operate from 5 AM to 11 PM, with a frequency of four to 20 minutes. On second and fourth Saturdays or on public holidays, the metro trains will run from 6 AM to 10:35 PM. On Sundays, train services will be operational from 7 AM to 11 PM.

Metro Ride app for last-mile connectivity

The authorities are taking measures to ease access to and from the metro stations. Commuters can make use of the Metro Ride app, which enables them to get services across 66 metro stations on the Green Line and Purple Line in Bangalore. Commuters can download and install the mobile application on Android or iPhone. They can use the app to book a ride to the desired metro station on the Namma Metro network.

 

Construction details

The Blue Line Metro in Bangalore is a 58.19-kilometre section comprising 30 metro stations. It is being developed in two phases: Phase 2A and Phase 2B.

Under Phase 2 of the Bangalore Metro project, around 72 km of metro line will be developed at a cost of Rs 56,000 Crore. The Phase 2A project is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

Phase 2A

Under Phase 2A of Namma Metro, a line connecting Central Silk Board and KR Puram, comprising 13 stations, will be developed.

The project includes two packages. The first package comprises 2.84 km of ramps for a flyover at the Central Silk Board junction and 9.86 km of the viaduct with six elevated stations.

In the second package, an 8.38-km viaduct with seven elevated stations, a 1.1-km depot line and a 0.30-km pocket track are being developed.

Phase 2B

Under Phase 2B of Namma Metro, a section connecting KR Puram and the Kempegowda International Airport will be developed. It will comprise 17 metro stations. Construction company Afcons Infrastructure Limited has been awarded the project. It has launched all girders on the Bellandur Flyover. Devarabeesanahalli flyover is also being developed as part of this project.

Multi-modal integration

The Bangalore Metro Phase 3 will facilitate multi-modal integration at 10 places: JP Nagar 4th Phase, JP Nagar, Kamakhya Bus Depot, Mysuru Road, Sumanahalli, Peenya, BEL Circle, Hebbal, Kempapura and Hosahalli. The Lottegollahalli and Hebbal will be linked to the railway stations in the vicinity through foot overbridges. Phase 3 metro stations will comprise dedicated bus bays, pickup and drop-off bays, pedestrian paths, IPT/autorickshaw stands, and a sharing facility. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will offer feeder buses to the metro station.

Bangalore Metro Blue Line expansion

The BMRCL plans to extend the Namma Metro network to 220 kilometre over the next five years by introducing six metro routes on the Blue Line and Pink Line covering 143 km and 95 new metro stations. The Blue and Pink line of Namma Metro are under construction.

The union cabinet has approved Phase 3 of the Bangalore Metro project, adding two additional metro lines and 31 metro stations to the existing network. The total estimated cost for the project is Rs 15,611 crore. This project will be completed in 2029. Phase 3, also known as the Orange Line, will cover 44.65 km and connect southern and western Bengaluru with Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal.
