July 20, 2023: The 15-storey Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), located in Surat, Gujarat, is now the world’s largest office building. It is spread across 7.1 million sqft of floor space. The SDB has replaced the Pentagon in the United States of America, which for 80 years was housing the largest office building in the world.

As per a CNN report, the project cost is around Rs 3,200 crore and has dining, wellness, retail and conference facilities for all the workers. Indian architecture firm Morphogenesis designed the building.

Media reports suggest that the building is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the second half of 2023. The building complex will have its first occupants by November 2023.

PM Modi, on July 19, 2023, tweeted, “Surat Diamond Bourse showcases the dynamism and growth of Surat’s diamond industry. It is also a testament to India’s entrepreneurial spirit. It will serve as a hub for trade, innovation, and collaboration, further boosting our economy and creating employment opportunities.”

The Surat Diamond Bourse office building complex in the gem capital of India is constructed over 35 acre of land. It will have more than 4,200 diamond merchant offices ranging from 300 to 75,000 sqft. The entire complex has 131 lifts connecting the floors.
