Surat Metro to be ready by March 2025

The entire Kapodra-Dreamcity stretch will be ready in December 2024.

June 7, 2023: The tunnelling work for the Surat Metro project is picking up pace and the 1.5-kilometre (km) tunnel has already been completed, according to a TOI report. Of the six underground metro stations, work on four stations is in the advanced stages.

According to metro officials, the tunnel work on the Kapodra-Dream city stretch is expected to be completed by December 2024.

Surat Metro is an under-construction mass rapid transit system (MRTS) being developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC). It will operate on two metro corridors of 40.45 km with 38 stations. The Surat Metro Rail project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 12,020 crore.

In September 2022, the construction work of Phase 1 of the Surat Metro project began after the GMRC awarded tenders worth over Rs 3,002 crore for various civil works, including those for the underground section.

Yogendrasingh Chauhan, general manager, GMRC, told TOI that work on eight to 10 metre is completed every day. Work on the 1.5-km Kapodra-Warehouse stretch has been completed. He said the entire Kapodra-Dreamcity stretch would be ready in December 2024. The deadline for the whole project would be achieved in March 2025, he added.

Surat Metro comprises a 6.47-km underground route on the Sarthana-Dreamcity stretch and starts from Kapodra.

 

Surat Metro project details

Line 1

The first corridor of Surat Metro is known as the Diamond Corridor, which will connect Sarthana to Dreamcity, covering 22.77 km. The Sarthana-Dreamcity line will include a 15.75-km elevated section and a 7.02-km underground section. There will be 20 stations in this route and a depot at Dreamcity.

The stations include Sarthana, Nature Park, Varaccha Chopati Garden, Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Kalakunj, Kapodra, Labheshwar Chowk, Central Warehouse, Surat Railway Station, Maskati Hospital, Chowk Bazar, Gandhi Baug, Kadarsha Ni Nal, Majura Gate (interchange), Rupali Canal, Althan Tenament, Althan Gam, VIP Road, Woman ITI, Bhimrad, Convention Center and Dream City.

Line 2

The second corridor, known as the textile corridor, will connect Bhesan and Saroli, covering 19.26 km. It will be a completely elevated route with 18 metro stations and a depot at Bhesan.

The stations include Bhesan, Botanical Garden, Ugat Vaarigruh, Palanpur Road, LP Savani School, Performing Art Centre, Adajan Gam, Aquarium, Badri Narayan Temple, Athwa Chopati, Majura Gate (interchange), Udhna Dawaja, Kamela Darwaja, Anjana Farm, Model Town, Magob, Bharat Cancer Hospital and Saroli.
