Bhopal is the capital of the State of Madhya Pradesh and also the administrative headquarters for the Bhopal Division and District alike. It is also called the City of Lakes for being home to several artificial and natural lakes while also being known for its pristine greenery. It is the 16th biggest city in the country and it was once a part of the District of Sehore after the State was formed. It was divided in 1972 to form the new District of Bhopal. The city has a rich legacy both under the rule of the Nawabs and then the British. It is also home to several tourist landmarks. The city comprises 85 wards while being governed by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation. The city covers a total area of 463 square kilometers while the population stood at 1,798,218 as of 2011. The coordinates of Bhopal are 23.2599° N, 77.4126° E. Key landmarks include the Bhimbetka Caves, Van Vihar and several dams like the Kolar Dam.

Bhopal is home to reputed research and educational institutions including the Master Control Facility of ISRO, AMPRI, BHEL and many other institutions like IIFM, NLIU, AIIMS, SPA, MANIT, IISER and IIIT. The city has a flourishing economy with its main sectors including electrical goods, pharmaceuticals, textiles and automobiles.
The Raja Bhoj International Airport is the main airport for the city and State. Bhopal also has the Bhopal Junction and Habibganj railway stations. NH-46 is the main highway for the city along with NH-146 and SH-18.
