Trivandrum

Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala, India

Thiruvananthapuram is also called Trivandrum. It is capital to the State of Kerala and had a population estimated at 957,730 people as of the year 2011. It lies on the western coastline of the country in proximity to the extreme southern portion of the mainland. It is a leading IT and ITeS hub of the State while accounting for 55% of its total software exports (as of the year 2016) according to reports. It is also called by the name given to it by Mahatma Gandhi, namely Evergreen city of India. There are several attractions in Thiruvananthapuram including the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Varkala and Kovalam Beaches, Anchuthengu and Poovar backwaters, and the Agastya Mala and Ponmudi regions which have the Western Ghats. It is also home to the Indian Air Force’s Southern Command headquarters along with the Vizhinjam International Seaport and the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station. The Thiruvananthapuram municipal corporation is the main governing authority for the area. The coordinates of Thiruvananthapuram are 08°29′15″N 76°57′9″E.

There are several educational institutions in Thiruvananthapuram including the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, University of Kerala, Indira Gandhi National Open University, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation, National Centre for Earth Science Studies, and the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research. There are many media institutions housed in the city along with film studios as well. Other educational institutions include the Mar Ivanios College. Leading hospitals here include the Ananthapuri Hospitals and Research Institute, Sree Uthradom Thirunal Hospital, SP Fort Hospital, and many others. The Thiruvananthapuram Pettah railway station is the main connectivity lifeline here along with the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station. The nearest airport is located at Trivandrum which is 3 km away from the area.
