It serves as both the Satara District's and the Satara Tehsil's administrative center. Its coordinates are 17.688°N 74.006°E and has an average elevation of 742 m. It spreads over an area of 22.42 km2. Marathi is the official language of this city. As of 2011 India census, Satara had a population of 179,147.
