The Nilgiris district is among the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu. Its name comes from the range of mountains that are spread across the borders of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Its coordinates are 11.4°N 76.7°E, and is spread over an area of 2565 square kilometers. The official languages of this district are Tamil, Badaga, Kannada and Malayalam. According to the 2011 census, Nilgiris district had a population of 735,394. This district experiences a much cooler and wetter climate.

The Nagapattinam–Gudalur National Highway passes through the Nilgiris district. The Nilgiri Ghat Roads connect the Nilgiris with nearby cities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
