Shivamogga, also known as Shimoga, is the district headquarters. It is located in Karnataka state and is on the banks of the Tunga River. It is an excellent gateway for the Western Ghats and is known as the ‘gateway of Malnad.’ It has 322,650 people and is among the smart cities that stand in the 4th position in Karnatak and 25th in the country as of November 2020.
The city has an elevation of 569 metres and has lush greenery and paddy fields on all its sides. It is 267km from Bangalore and 195 km from Mangalore.

The Kuvempu University is 20km from Shimoga, located at Shankarghatta. Then, there is Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences, a famous medical college in Shimoga. There is the Subbaiah Institute of Medical science in Purale. Other famous engineering colleges are PES Institute of Technology and Management and Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering.
