Mhow is officially called Dr. Ambedkar Nagar and is a leading Cantonment within the District of Indore in the State of Madhya Pradesh, lying approximately 23 kilometers from Indore City. It also lies on the Old Mumbai-Agra Road and the renaming officially took place by the Government of Madhya Pradesh back in the year 2003. The Treaty of Mandsaur between the Holkar Dynasty and the British led to the establishment of the town in 1818 by John Malcolm. The area was once the headquarters to the Southern Command’s 5th or Mhow Division at the time of the British rule. The small town is predominantly linked with the Indian Army even today. B.R. Ambedkar was also born here. The area comes within the Indore Metropolitan Region and lies at an elevation of 556 meters. The population of Mhow stands at 85,023 people as of the year 2011. Its coordinates are 22.55°N 75.76°E.
