Among the many popular land measurement units in India is murabba. The unit, which is the Hindi equivalent of “square”, is peerless among its local counterparts in the sense that it is the only unit among modern units of land area with fixed dimensions. Despite that, the gaj is still popular for land measurement in Punjab and Haryana while the murabba has become obsolete.
Murabba was most commonly used in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana to measure vast tracts of land, and is therefore still referred to in the rural parts of the two states. The usage of murabba was also common in Pakistan's Punjab as well. Even though the unit is still referred to in common language, the more prevalent international variants of the units are now in usage for land measurement in northern states of the country.
One murabba is equal to 25 acres while 1 bigha is equivalent to 0.02 Murabba. 1 murabba, sometimes also written as marabba, is approximately 10.117 hectares
