Hooghly, commonly known as Hugli is a district in the state of West Bengal, India. The district is named after the Hooghly River. It used to be the major port for trade for India. The town was founded by the Portuguese in 1599. It was a central commercial and trade area, with the Portuguese beginning trade in the city. In addition, the town was a river port in the fifteenth century. Among other European powers that came to Hooghly were the Dutch, the Danish, the British, the French, the Belgians, and the Germans. But among these European countries, the British ultimately became the most powerful. The center of gravity of trade and commerce in the Bengal province shifted from the town of Hooghly to Kolkata and Hooghly subsequently lost its importance as Kolkata prospered. Geographically, the district is flat with no elevation, and the river borders the district on the east side. Another major river is 'Damodar'. The district is bordered by Howrah District to the south, Bardhaman District to the north, and to the east by the River Hooghly. Economically, this district is the most developed in all of West Bengal. It is the primary industry of jute textile. The district comprises four subdivisions: Chinsurah, Chandannagore, Srirampore and Arambagh. The railway is developed extensively with four junctions and there are several bus stands. Currently, there are approximately 5 million people residing in this district. Read More
